Kolkata: The International Kolkata Book Fair, the city’s one of the most popular events, is all set to kick off on January 31 at the Central Park Mela Ground in Salt Lake. Apart from tens of thousands of book-loving Bengalis, scores of people from different walks of life from across the country will attend the event.
The 46th edition of the event will be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday and Mara José Gálvez Salvador, from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports, will be attending the inaugural ceremony. Spain has been selected as the focal theme country for this year’s book fair.

This year’s event will have the largest number of participants with around 900 stalls.

Additional Metro services for book fair

To facilitate smooth journies within the city for the attendees of the book fair, Kolkata Metro will be running additional services from January 31 to February 12 on its East-West Corridor (Green Line). There will be 120 services (60 UP and 60 Dn trains) instead of the regular 106 services from Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays, 80 additional services will be available.

  • The trains will be available from 06:50 am (instead of 06:55 am) to 10 pm.
  • The trains will run at an interval of 12 minutes from 2:40 pm to 9:19 pm (instead of 4.55 pm. to 10 pm) during the period.
  • The first metro services on the Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V route will begin at 06.50 am while Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah will start at 07 am.

On Sundays

  • As many as 40 UP and 40 Dn trains will be operated on Sundays during the period.
  • The train services will be available from 12:50 pm to 10 pm.
  • The first metro service on the Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V route will begin at 12:50 pm while the last metro train will depart from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah at 9:40 pm.

The stations on the Green line are Sealdah, Phoolbagan, Salt Lake stadium, Bengal Chemical, City Centre, Central Park, Karunamoyee, and Salt Lake Sector-V.

Special Buses

In addition to Metro services, the road transport agencies West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) and South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) will be running special bus services. A temporary bus terminus will be set up at the Mayukh Bhavan complex to accommodate the additional buses.

The special bus services will operate from 3 pm to 9 pm between the fair venue and several destinations like Thakurpukur, Garia, Jadavpur, Barasat, Baruipur, Shakuntala Park, Dankuni and Barrackpore.

Besides, long-distance buses will operate from Jhargram, Midnapore, Asansol and Durgapur. There will also be special shuttle services from Sealdah, Kamalgazi, Tollygunge Metro and Dunlop.
