KOLKATA: The Publishers and Booksellers Guild of Spain has invited its Kolkata counterpart, the organisers of Kolkata International Book Fair (KIBF), to participate in the Liber Book Fair in Madrid in 2025. They also want to invite India as the focal theme country there. Spain is the theme country in this year’s KIBF.
Addressing media at the Spain stall set up at KIBF, Antonio Maria Avila, the director general of Publishers and Booksellers Guild of Spain, said they wanted to invite Indian publishers to their fair. “It will be a platform where not only publishers of the two countries can meet, there can be exchanges in other areas like music and cinema as well so that we can work together and the Spanish people can have exchanges with India,” Avila said.
Publishers and Booksellers Guild-Kolkata general secretary Tridib Chatterjee said they were extremely happy to get the invitation. “We want to be there and participate in the Madrid book festival. We are enthusiastic to accept the invitation,” he said.
Christina Linares, who is representing the publishing companies from Spain in KIBF, said they were excited over being invited as the guest of honour in Kolkata book fair. “We are excited about this invitation as we think we can create new bridges, new professional and business relationships among countries. India is rich in literature. In Spain, we mainly know about Rabindranath Tagore. We want to have more cultural exchanges with India,” she said.
“We have two book fairs, one is where people come and buy books. The other is the Liber one where distributors, publishers and booksellers meet and do business. It is the Liber which is the professional book fair where rights and translation grants could be discussed. It can be a process from which India can participate in the Madrid book fair,” Linares said.
On Tuesday, thousands of book lovers thronged the book fair premises. Apart from Spain, 19 more countries are participating in this year’s KIBF, with Thailand being the newest entrant.
