Presidency University divided over e-poll proposal – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: Presidency University has proposed to conduct the students’ union elections in online mode to increase participation.
Students’ organizations have opposed the idea on the ground of ‘transparency’. Some officials of Presidency University, too, said the plan may not be feasible.
Over the last few days, the students organised sit-in demonstrations, demanding union elections.
“It is to increase participation that the proposal has been made. But the final decision will be taken by the students,” said a campus source.
Rishav Saha, general secretary of SFI, Presidency University unit, said: “There is hardly any transparency in online voting.” Ahan Karmakar, convenor of IC, said, “The students’ organisations of political parties will get scope to manipulate votes.”
Dean of students Arun Maiti said the university was ready to conduct the polls as soon as the government notified it.
