Paying tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 126th birth anniversary, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat will address the swayamsevaks at a programme titled ‘Netaji Loho Pronam’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bose on January 23. Bhagwat, in an open public programme, at Shahid Minar will address the swayamsevaks in Kolkata on the same day. Bhagwat will visit Kolkata on a five-day programme to the state on January 19 and stay till January 23. There will be several organizational meetings in the state, which will be part of Sangh’s “organizational Prabash” in South Bengal.

The Swayamsevaks will also perform physical drills to pay respect to the freedom fighter and his sacrifice for the country. “Around 20-25 noted personalities and intellectuals from Bengal, North East and other eastern Indian states, including Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand, will be present at the event which will be addressed by the RSS chief,” Ajay Kumar Nandi, RSS Eastern Regional Sangh Chalak, said.

Netaji Subhas Chnadra Bose and first RSS chief Keshav Baliram Hegrewar connect back to 1921. “Bose and the first RSS chief first met in 1921 in Congress’ session when Hegrewar was the secretary of Bidarbha Congress. Later, when Bose was travelling in a train from Nagpur, Bose saw swayamsevaks performing drills in uniform, which reportedly amazed Bose. He met Hegrewar in 1940 in Nagpur,” Nandi said.

“Bhagwatji will pay respect and offer salute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary, under the name of ‘Netaji Laho Pranam’. He will also address a public programme of fully-uniformed 2500 swayamsevaks from the Kolkata and Howrah Municipality areas,” Biplab Roy, Prant Prachar Pramukh of Dakshin Banga, Kolkata had told ET.

Bhagwat will also participate in several internal organizational meetings of South Bengal section of Sangh during his visit.

The programmes will include various organizational meetings, where senior swayamsevaks from Kolkata, Howrah, North & South 24 Parganas districts, East & West Midnapore districts. These meetings have been scheduled on various days and shifts, starting from January 20-22 at RSS headquarters ‘Keshav Bhawan’ in Kolkata.

Ahead of Panchayat polls, Bhagwat’s visit is crucial at a time when the saffron brigade is gearing up for the preparations of the Panchayat polls. Roy told ET that Bhagwat’s presence in West Bengal is likely to boost the party’s morale in the state before the polls.“The number of “Sakhas”in South Bengal has increased from 722 in South Bengal and central Bengal in March 2014 to 684 in South Bengal alone.
