Warm start to year with temperature at 17.5°C – Times of India

KOLKATA: The first day of the new year was warm and cloudy, with the minimum temperature climbing three degrees to touch 17.5°C on Sunday, four notches above normal. This was the warmest New Year’s Day in the past few years.
A cloud cover triggered by local clouds and a sudden disappearance of the northwesterly pushed the mercury up, the Met office said. However, the temperature could dip to 16°C on Monday. The maximum on Sunday was 26.7°C, a degree above normal.
The northwesterly wind has halted, but could resume on January 6, said weathermen at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). “The southeasterly wind is not flowing in either. The chill from the north is no longer being carried here, perhaps due to a western disturbance,” said RMC director G K Das.
“The minimum will hover around 15°C-16°C and it will be moderately chilly,” said Das.
The first half of January 2022 had been the warmest in almost a decade, with average maximum and minimum temperatures – from January 1 to 11 – of 28.3°C and 16.3°C. The average maximum and minimum temperatures in January, according to Met statistics compiled over 30 years, are 25.8°C and 14.1°C. The minimum on Christmas morning in 2022 rose to 17.2°C, three notches above normal. The maximum climbed two degrees above normal to 28.6°C.
