Traffic constable Tapan Chakraborty (40) took evasive action and tried to jump out of the car’s way. But even though he was lucky to have escaped death, he was still hit by a corner of the car, knocking him down before speeding away. Chakraborty is now being treated in a hospital off the Bypass for multiple injuries, including a broken ribcage.

A massive hunt is on for the driver – who was possibly drunk, judging by his reaction – and the car, but the cops were not able to do that till late on Sunday. The maximum fine for drink-driving is Rs 2,000 for the first offence and Rs 3,000 for the second time, and the offence is bailable from a police station itself. Now, the driver – charged for rash driving, causing grievous hurt through rash or negligence, and deterring a public servant from performing his or her duty – faces a two-year jail term.
The incident happened at a routine checkpoint near the Chinatown cut-out around 11.20pm. As part of the city cops’ enhanced drive this festive season, Chakraborty, from the Tiljala traffic guard, was checking motorists. When he saw the vehicle coming from Park Circus, he went ahead and gestured at the driver to slow down at the checkpoint. But the driver pressed the accelerator and crashed into Chakraborty, flinging him off the ground, before speeding off towards Chingrighata.
