Saturday reopening for Santragachhi ROB – Times of India

KOLKATA: The Santragachhi Railway Over Bridge (ROB) is all set to reopen on Saturday.
Senior PWD officials and police said they were even trying to pre-pone the reopening to Friday. A high-level meeting on the bridge reopening is also scheduled on that day.
Himangshu Pal, an official of Hercules Structural Systems Pvt Ltd, the agency doing the bridge repairs, said that they have replaced 20 out of 41 expansion joints on the bridge. He said now the curating job was being done that will need two more days.
“We will open the road to all forms of traffic a day after we hand over the road space. It is most likely to be December 23 morning, if all goes as per schedule,” said a top officer. Cops will also withdraw the notification that presently stops all forms of trucks from using the ROB.
A total of 1,500 cops – including constables, civic volunteers and NCC cadets – will return to regular duty soon after, confirmed sources.
The ROB was partially shut from November 19 for repair work leading to vehicles taking around 30 to 70 minutes to cross the stretch from Vidyasagar Setu to Kona and vice versa despite the Howrah Police deploying hundreds of officers to manage traffic all through the day.
The final extension joint work, claimed sources, was completed on Sunday night.
The engineers said all minor work should be completed in the next 48 hours. “We had received instructions to complete the work before Christmas. We worked overtime to complete the task assigned to us. The work is being completed in record time amidst constant traffic movement except at night,” said an engineer.
