Cyclone Sitrang will bring heavy rains to Kolkata.

The atmospheric formation currently lays around 430 km south of Sagar Island on Monday morning. It will intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm, which will bring in moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday in Kolkata and the adjoining districts of Howrah and Hooghly. Will speed will go up to 45 to 60 kmph in the city. Heavy to very heavy rain and wind reaching speed of 90 to 100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, will hit other coastal districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore on Monday and Tuesday the Met said.
Considering the prospects of heavy rain, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has made elaborate arrangements to take any kind of cyclone-related incidents. Police, fire service, civic officials and disaster response team have been ordered to be prepared for any emergency. KMC directed all pumping stations to remain active arrangements have also been made for shifting residents from dilapidated buildings and low-laying areas to local schools or community halls. KMC has also advised various departments to make emergency preparations for the cyclonic storm.

However, as per the current analysis of the weather officials, the cyclone is expected to head north without making severe damage to Kolkata. Just before intensifying into a cyclone, it is expected to take a recurve and move north first and then northeast. Though the system is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, it is likely to move towards Bangladesh. If the storm sticks to the projected path, Kolkata is likely to get moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, along with occasional gusts of wind, the IMD officials said.
