This new museum located in a refurbished historic prison (the correctional home has been relocated elsewhere), the Alipore Central Jail, will take you back to the days of India’s struggle for independence. Constructed in 1906, it housed many key leaders during that period. History has been recreated through photographs, paintings, maps, letters and other documents, statues of freedom fighters and other installations, etc. This old hospital building has a special exhibition on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose among other things. The museum also holds a light and sound show in the evening. The museum is open every day except Monday, from noon to 6pm (ticket counter closes at 5pm). The light and sound show is held (closed on Mondays) twice, at 6.30pm and 7.30pm; you have to buy tickets separately for the show. Café, souvenir shop, rest rooms, parking area available.
Address: 17 Judges Court Road, Alipore, Kolkata 700027.

Aircraft Museum

The Naval Aircraft Museum, second such museum in the country (first one in Vishakhapatnam), is a place for aviation enthusiasts. The star attraction here is a decommissioned Tupolev Tu-142 M maritime reconnaissance aircraft (reassembled here) which served in the Indian Navy between 1988 and 2017. The museum is open on all days except Monday; from Tuesday to Friday, it is open from 2.30pm to 8.30pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays, from noon to 8.30pm. Ticket counter closes at 8pm.

Solar Dome

Built to make people aware about the importance of renewable energy, this 27 metre high solar dome has 2,000 active solar panels which has the power to supply electricity for a number of operations, ranging from activities within the dome to lighting up streetlights in the vicinity. The ground floor of the dome, which is now accessible to visitors, has exhibits on the uses of renewable energy and why is it important for us.
