TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law approaches Calcutta HC for permission to travel abroad – India Today

Maneka Gambhir, the sister-in-law of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday to seek permission to travel abroad. She has been questioned by ED in connection with the alleged coal smuggling case.

By Rajesh Saha: Maneka Gambhir, the sister-in-law of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, approached a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday to seek permission to travel abroad.

In her application to Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s bench, Gambhir said that her mother, who stays in Bangkok, is not keeping well and hence there is an urgent necessity for her to travel. Justice Ghosh has admitted Gambhir’s petition and the matter will come up for hearing on Wednesday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has questioned her several times in connection with the alleged coal smuggling case. As per the previous court order, she is required to get the court’s permission to travel abroad.

Earlier on September 10, she was travelling to Bangkok from Kolkata international airport. During the immigration process, she was allegedly stopped there by the immigration officer and was not allowed to board the flight.

The immigration officer reportedly told her that the ED had issued a lookout notice against her. ED officials reached the airport and issued an appearance notice for questioning. Maneka Gambhir with it and appeared before the ED office in Kolkata on September 12.
