Injured CISF assistant commandant Subir Ghosh at SSKM Hospital on Sunday

KOLKATA: Akshay Kumar Mishra had targeted at least four senior officers on Saturday – assistant commandant Subir Ghosh, assistant sub inspector Ranjit Sarengi and two other officers of inspector and sub inspector ranks. While he managed to gun down Sarengi and severely injure Ghosh, the other two managed to escape hiding behind trees and buildings on the Indian Museum premises, police said.
A post-mortem examination conducted upon Sarengi found five bullet injuries in his body – on his forehead, neck, chest and hand. The preliminary post-mortem mentioned the bullet injuries on chest and forehead as the reason behind his death.
“The nature of injuries as well as the primary interrogation confirm that he had targeted a few persons and planned the attack in his mind once the visitors had left. He alleged he was harassed by these officers for the past two and half months,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
Police said, around 6.30pm, all CISF personnel had gathered at an area on the museum premises in front of a sentry post. Once the visitors had left and the evening attendance of CISF was underway, Mishra had snatched the AK-47 from a sentry and began firing, aiming at Ghosh and the three other officers standing near him.
“His primary anger was against Ghosh. The other three were also close to him and thus he attacked them as well, as other CISF personnel ran for cover. While some hid behind trees and buildings, some even jumped in the water,” said the officer.
On Sunday, Ghosh was released from the hospital in the afternoon as he raised his bandaged right arm, gesturing that he was doing fine.
“I am fine. I have been asked to come to the hospital again for dressing next week,” said Ghosh, while getting inside his car. On being asked the reason behind Mishra’s pent-up anger against him, Ghosh replied: “I don’t think he had any anger against me.”
SSKM doctors said the bullet hit him on his right wrist and damaged his soft tissues. However, he was out of danger and thus released from hospital.
Ghosh’s son, however, was relieved seeing his father coming out of the hospital. “I just shiver to think what would have happened had the bullet hit him on his chest or belly. He is a strong man,” he said.
Sarengi’s family – wife and a daughter – were escorted out of their rented Kudghat home on Sunday morning to their ancestral home in Odisha. Before leaving, his wife handed out an authorization letter to a CISF official, who collected the body after post mortem. The coffin with Sarengi’s body left for Odisha around 6.10pm. CISF officials said he would be given a gun salute there.
