KOLKATA/SOUTH 24 PARGANAS: The Met office has predicted heavy showers in Kolkata on August 10 and 11 under the impact of a low-pressure triggered by a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal. The rain may be accompanied by surface wind at a speed of 40-50 km/hr at one or two places. On one of the two days, Kolkata may receive 70-110 mm rain.
The South 24 Parganas district administration has sounded an alert for the villagers of Mousuni, Ghoramara, Sagar, Patharpratima, and Gosaba in Sunderbans, warning them of a flood situation due to high tide and heavy rain, which are predicted over the next few days. These areas were damaged by cyclones like Amphan and Yaas.
“The low-pressure is likely to develop into a depression. It will move towards Odisha. Kolkata will receive heavy rain either on August 10 or 11,” said Regional Meteorological Centre director GK Das. Along with Kolkata, coastal districts of East Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas are set to be lashed by heavy rain. Both the districts may receive 70mm to 120mm rain on Wednesday and Thursday. Howrah and Hooghly are expected to receive heavy rain as well. District administrations are keeping flood centers, local clubs and school buildings ready for evacuation.
