KOLKATA: A 27-year-old BPO executive, who was returning home in a train after night shift at her Sector V office, was injured when a man boarded the ladies compartment and hit her with a water bottle, trying to snatch her iPhone and a smart phone in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident happened between Bidhannagar and Dum Dum stations around 5.15am. The woman, Tanisha Chatterjee Kaur, a resident of Ichapore in North 24 Parganas, raised an alarm and fought with the man before he assaulted her and jumped off the train when it stopped at a signal.
“I am still in pain and the left side of my face has got swollen. But what I want to highlight is the necessity to ensure women’s safety in the early morning and late night hours. Today, the man hit me with a heavy bottle of water. On some other day, it could be a knife,” said the woman who has been commuting in the train route for the last five months since she got married in Ichapore.
The BPO executive said her shift gets over at 4.30am, following which she takes a bus to reach Bidhannagar Road Station in Ultadanga and boards the 5.12am Ranaghat local to reach her home.
“Wednesday was no exception. The ladies compartment was almost empty and I sat beside a window and was scrolling through my phone. Barely a couple of minutes had passed since the train started, it halted at a signal before Dum Dum station. That is when the man got on the train and before I could understand anything, he attacked me with the bottle. It felt like a stone had hit me and I almost lost my sense for a few seconds,” the woman recounted.
The next thing she remembers was the man trying to snatch her phones but she clutched onto them and started screaming for help.
“Hearing my cries, a woman sitting on the other side of the compartment came rushing for help as I also held on to the man’s shirt. But he hit me again with the bottle and kicked me as my grip loosened and he jumped off the train,” she said.
The woman said she will lodge a formal complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Thursday morning while on her way back from work.
