KOLKATA: The West Bengal administration on Saturday after a meeting in the afternoon decided to replace the police commissioner of Howrah and accordingly Praveen Tripathy was given charge.
Even the Nabanna officials shifted Howrah Rural superintendent of police Saumya Roy and posted Swati Bhangalia as the new SP.
C Sudhakar who was the police commissioner was posted as joint police commissioner of Kolkata Police and Roy was posted as DCP of South West Kolkata. Praveen Tripathi was earlier additional CP of Kolkata Police.
On Saturday fresh violence was reported from Panchla in Howrah as some shops were gutted and some houses were also set ablaze amid the prohibitory order.
When the police lobbed tear gas shells and tried to disperse the mob, they were attacked with stones and some policemen sustained injuries.
Even on Friday senior police officers were gheraoed by the mob in rural Howrah.
Meanwhile, the state administration on Friday had clamped Sec 144 CrPC in different parts of Howrah which witnessed violence in different places.
Even Domjur police station witnessed major violence as cars and police vans parked outside the police station were ransacked.
The state administration had already suspended the internet connectivity in Howrah which several police officers posted in Howrah said were creating problems for them too.
Beldanga police station was attacked on Friday night following a social media post and for which the police had a trying time to control the situation.
On Saturday, to stop spreading of rumours the home secretary BP Gopalika, directed that there will be temporary suspension of internet services in parts of Beldanga I and II blocks spreading over Beldanga, Rejinagar and ShaKtipur police stations in Murshidabad. The suspension will remain valid till Tuesday morning.
