Fake call centre busted in Kolkata – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: Carrying on with their sustained raids against fraudulent and illegal call centres in the city, since the fresh exposure of scamming call centres in Kolkata by a US-based Youtuber last month, Bidhannagar police sealed yet another call centre in Sector V and arrested nine of its officials and employees on Friday.
Officers of Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police raided the office of JoinUs Techsoft Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd at the fourth floor of Meridian Building at Salt Lake Sector V and found hundreds of young men and women, dressed in formals and calling people in UK, USA and Australia.
A deeper quest revealed the callers were scamming the foreigners as well as India in the pretext of giving tech support, website selling and solving their problems regarding internet speed.
“The callers were posing as officials of popular software and mobile app companies and were installing screen sharing softwares on the victims’ systems and were ultimately cheating them by hacking their bank accounts,” said an officer of Bidhannagar City Police.
Cops charged them under IPC sections dealing with cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and sections under the Indian Telegraph Act 1985.
Cops arrested Zoheb Zulqarnain (36), Mudassir Ahmed (28), Dev Kumar (28), Md. Toukir (21), Md. Tanveer (22), Shanawaz Alam (26), Shoaib Mohammad (27), Md. Shahnawaz Alam (33) and Mudassir Alam (28).
The arrest comes on the backdrop of a stunning exposure by US based Youtuber Mark Rober in his 26-minute video documenting and exposing three scam call centres in Sector V and New Town on May 9. Since then Bidhannagar Police have busted five fake call centres in the township including MET Technologies that featured on Rober’s video.
