Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee to travel to Dubal to seek medical treatment. The Enforcement Directorate had earlier stated that it was not ready to allow Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to travel abroad. The TMC leader had then moved the Calcutta HC to seek permission.

Abhishek had pleaded the court that the ED had denied him permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

It may be noted that Abhishek is under the ED radar in connection with the West Bengal coal smuggling scam and the anti-money laundering central agency has already questioned the TMC leader in connection with the case.

Abhishek, who is a Lok Sabha MP from the Diamond Harbour constituency, had told the court in his plea that he had asked the ED to spare him from questioning for some time as he has to go to Dubai to seek ophthalmological treatment. However, the central agency objected to his request.

Reports said Abhishek had written to the ED and sought permission to travel abroad from June 3 to 10.

The Trinamool leader was in the news recently for other reasons as well. He had called a couple of judges biased and alleged that they operated at the behest of some forces.

“I feel bad to say that a couple of members of the judiciary are acting at the behest of others and as agents. They are ordering for CBI verdicts in petty cases. They are putting a stay in murder cases. This is unthinkable,” Abhishek stated at a public rally in Haldia on May 28.

Following the remarks, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar ordered the state Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi to initiate action against the TMC leader over his remarks against the judiciary.
