More supply from Garden Reach to end south Kolkata water woes – Times of India

Kolkata News

Kolkata: The perennial water shortage in large parts of south Kolkata may be over with the KMC water supply department set to give out an additional 25 million gallons per day (MGD) to areas like Garden Reach, Behala, New Alipore, Chetla, Kalighat, Tollygunge, Garfa, Kasba and other south and soutwest areas.
The increased supply is owing to the augmented capacity of Garden Reach Waterworks. According to an estimate, after the completion of the new water treatment plant, the capacity of the Garden Reach Waterworks has been augmented from 185 MGD to 210 MGD.
This will also mean less dependance on ground water in these areas. “Now we are equipped to supply more potable water to large parts of the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt, where lakhs depend on ground water,” said the KMC official.
The KMC water supply department is in search of small parcels of land in Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt to build water booster pumping stations so that additional water reaches every household.
Sushil Kar, a retired government official and a resident of Netaji Nagar, hoped that with the completion of the augmentation process, Garden Reach Waterworks would prove beneficial for residents of south Kolkata neighbourhoods. “Now we receive water partially from Garden Reach and the rest from a big diameter tube well. We are in the dark about the quality of the ground water and hence compelled to buy packaged water. We are waiting for supply from Garden Reach Waterworks,” said Kar.
