Kolkata: Tele actor Pallavi’s live-in partner Sagnik Chakraborty held after 18-hour questioning – Times of India

Kolkata: Twenty-six-year-old Sagnik Chakraborty — the live-in partner of television actor Pallavi Dey — was arrested by Garfa police on Tuesday evening after 18 hours of questioning from Monday afternoon till Tuesday morning.
Cops said Chakraborty had “withheld crucial information regarding his employment and his joint financial investments with Dey”.
The arrest came barely 48 hours after the 25-year-old actor was found dead in her rented apartment in Garfa’s Gangulypukur and barely hours after cops registered an FIR against Chakraborty following a murder and cheating complaint lodged by the actor’s father, Nilu Dey. Senior officers at Lalbazar stated that the arrest was based on a financial fraud committed by Chakraborty, especially regarding the purchase of a flat in Rajarhat and that as of now, the arrest had nothing to do with the murder charge.
“We will now question him at length. There are several questions to which we are seeking answers from him. We will share more details in the future once the probe progresses,” stated DCP Atul V.
Police sources said that Chakraborty had remained evasive to most of the questions since the beginning of his questioning on Monday. “We asked him about his job as he claimed that he was working with a data centre. We asked him when he had attended the office last after we found multiple transactions from his account to multiple people. The transactions ranged from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. He claimed he had stopped going to the office a week ago due to personal reasons. We spoke to some people whom he transferred money recently on a periodic basis. They claimed it was Chakraborty who paid them regularly and that he used the name of Shane in office. He had stopped going to office when Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police and CID had begun raids against fake call centres across the city. Naturally, we are probing his probable links with any fake call centre,” said a police source.
Cops said the couple had booked a flat in Rajarhat and a document shared with the police shows that Chakraborty’s father had paid the money. “But we have been provided certain evidence, which show Pallavi might have transferred the money to Chakraborty before the payment for the flat was carried out. This will be one more angle that needs to be probed. As of now, we are yet to ask Sagnik’s kin to join the probe,” said a source.
The Dey family alleged that the actor had paid Rs 57 lakh of the Rs 80 lakh paid for the Rajarhat flat.
“We have gone through the actor’s financial transactions. However, we will now focus on the multiple joint accounts operated by the couple. Unlike what is being speculated, the complaint by the actor’s father does not mention that his daughter had bought a car. If required, we will look at its funding,” said the police source. Cops have also confirmed that Chakraborty was married before he walked into a relationship with the actor. Cops have sought a clarification on the status of that marriage.
“There are three women and two men who were friends at different stages of their lives since school. These friendships led to relationships. We might clarify them once we ask them to join investigations. However, at present, we are solely concerned about examining the financial transactions between the actor and Chakraborty,” said a senior officer.
Meanwhile, the actor’s father claimed that his daughter often brought home Chakraborty. “They had an argument where I picked up the name of the girl I named in the FIR. She seemed to come in all their conversations,” he alleged. Two women, including the wife of Chakraborty, are also under police scanner.
