Kolkata: Face, legs in plastic bag, man found dead in flat – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: A 65-year-old man was found dead in his first-floor flat located close to Bijoygarh market in south Kolkata on Tuesday morning. Nidhir Chandra Kundu, a former state government employee and now a photographer, was found with his face and legs wrapped in plastic. The body had began decomposing, said cops, suggesting that he died either late on Saturday evening or Sunday.
Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma said they suspect it to be a murder. “We can confirm once we receive the post-mortem report,” said Sharma.
DCP Atul V, who visited the spot to investigate, said the body was stuffed under the bed. Police sources said the accused had used beddings and quilt to hide the body.
“The accused had switched on all the fans inside the house but had switched off all the lights. Since the house had a self-locking system, the accused just pushed the door shut while leaving,” claimed a source.
The police said, prima facie, no injury was noticed on the body. “We believe he was hit on the head. However, it was not easy finding any injury as the body had started to decay long back. The post-mortem report is expected to establish what we suspect,” said a senior Lalbazar officer.
Several costly electronic items belonging to Kundu – a laptop, cameras, TV set and his mobile phone – are missing from the house. “We are trying to ascertain if any cash and jewellery too is missing. At present, we believe this might be a murder for profit. However, all other possible angles, including personal enmity, are also being checked,” said an officer.
“A relative had come to his residence on Tuesday and got no response despite repeatedly pressing the call bell. He then enquired with neighbours who said they had last spotted him on Saturday evening when he had gone out to buy bread and milk. It was then that they contacted Kundu’s nephew. This nephew had a key. When they opened the door, a foul smell greeted them. They searched the flat and recovered the body from under the bed,” said a senior investigator.
Cops said Kundu had retired as a security guard of the state women and child development department and was last posted at the new treasury building in Alipore in 2017. His wife had passed away 10 years ago. The couple had no children. His mother – Tara Bala Kundu (92) had visited the Bijoygarh flat about a week ago and she got injured after falling in the bathroom. After that, she went to his brother’s home. Every day the victim used to call his mother. As there was no call from him, the relative came to his home and check the matter. .
