Kolkata News

Calcutta High Court on Monday sought the state government’s response to a new Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the murder of TMC Panihati councillor Anupam Dutta.

According to reports, the Trinamool Congress Panihati Councillor was shot dead on March 12 when he had gone to take stock of work on a park in his area. The sequence of events was caught on a CCTV camera, where it showed Dutta riding pillion on a two-wheeler when he was shot at point-blank range.

According to local reports, Anupam Dutta was rushed to a local hospital in Belghoria, but he was declared ‘brought dead’.

In a separate incident, Tapan Kandu, a Congress leader from the Jhalda municipality, was shot dead on the very same day. Now the CBI is investigating the Tapan Kandu murder case.

Meanwhile, the opposition pointed fingers at the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal. The Central Investigative agency has recently been handed over a series of cases by the court amid the growing outrage in West Bengal over the increasing incidences of crime. This was the first PIL filed in court pertaining to this case which sought a CBI probe.
