Tapas Ray was arrested from a spot near Captain Bheri, off EM Bypass, based on a tip-off that a man riding a motorcycle was carrying drugs.

Ray, a resident of Dubrajpur in Birbhum, used to operate as a drug peddler in Durgapur, the police said.

He was carrying the heroin in a bag tied to the back of his motorcycle. Officers said large quantities of heroin were usually seized from cars and trucks.

“This was possibly the first time that such a huge quantity of heroin was found in a bag tied to a two-wheeler,” an officer said.

“The accused wanted to hoodwink cops and chose to drive down all the way from Durgapur to Calcutta on a motorcycle,” the officer said.

The police are yet to find out who Ray was to deliver the consignment.
