Temperature in Kolkata falls to season’s lowest on weekend at 11.2° C&

Kolkata: The city felt the chill as the month’s temperature dropped further with the mercury falling to 11.20 C yesterday. According to the Met office, the chill can continue today.

The minimum temperature can increase by a degree. The maximum temperature yesterday was 24.50 C. The temperature is all set to fall on December 30 and 31, going below 120 C. Kolkata had reported a minimum temperature of 11.40 C on December 21.

With the wind picking up speed, the temperature has fallen. G.K. Das, Regional Meteorological Centre director told the Times of India, “While it could slow down a bit over the next 24 hours, we expect a fresh spurt from Wednesday when snowfall is expected in the north-western Himalayas. It could pull the mercury down across north India and an impact could be felt in Kolkata.”

It is still too early to predict if the temperature fall would lead to a corresponding spurt in the speed of the wind. Das added, “But the possibility is not ruled out. The mercury will hover around the 12-130 C mark for three-four days.”

The citizens soaked in the chill yesterday as the Christmas weekend ended. All the usual tourist spots remained filled and people wrapped themselves in woollen clothes to keep off the north-westerly wind that got colder as the day progressed.

The city has witnessed big crowds at areas like Park Street, Maidan, Eco Park, Alipore Zoo and Nicco Park since Christmas. The chill has convinced more people to go out of their homes, although doctors have alerted that not maintaining social distance can be fatal.

The wind is flowing into Kolkata at the proper time for the temperature to fall. Since there is no system above Bay of Bengal that can come in the way, the wind would continue to bring in the chill, Das said.
