KMC polls: Calcutta high court quashes BJP plea seeking deployment of central forces – Times of India

Kolkata News

NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court has quashes a plea by the BJP, asking for the deployment of Central Forces for Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections.
The KMC elections will be conducted under the responsibility of the state police.
The Supreme Court had on Monday refused to entertain the petition filed the BJP and asked the party to approach the Calcutta high court.
A bench of Justices L Nagesara Rao and BR Gavai told senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the BJP, that it would not entertain the plea and that the party can approach the high court instead.
The Calcutta high court had on Wednesday also refused to stay the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) election due on December 19, while directing the state poll panel and the West Bengal government to take measures for holding elections in other civic bodies at the earliest with the least possible number of phases.
The State Election Commission and the state government had earlier told the court that elections to 111 municipal bodies will be held in six to eight phases by May 2022, but dates can be fixed later considering the spread of Omicron variant of Covid-19, and board examination dates.
