PCB asks book fair organisers to follow all green norms – Times of India

Kolkata News

Kolkata: Bengal Pollution Control Board has asked the Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Guild to comply with environmental norms, including implementation of plastic and noise rules, strict compliance of solid waste management rules, suppression of dust, and conducting awareness drives.
“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is a champion for a cleaner environment. So, PCB asked the Guild to maintain norms as the fair attracts footfall in lakhs. This time, the book fair has grown in size. So, it is important to follow all environmental rules,” said state environment minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia.
The PCB letter mentioned several directions of the NGT. “We have told them to use carry bags above 120-micron thick with a stricter ban on single-use plastic cutlery and thermocol for decoration at the venue. Besides, we have asked them to implement the noise norms by fitting each microphone with a noise-limiting device,” said PCB chairman Kalyan Rudra.
“The committee should take steps to suppress dust generated from movement of visitors, and the organisers should impart sufficient awareness regarding environmental norms by affixing posters and distributing handbills,” the letter added.
“We have asked the fair organisers to dispose the solid waste properly with help from Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation,” Rudra said.
