By Anupam Mishra: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a first-of-a-kind vehicle location tracking system in Kolkata on Monday. The CM said it would help the police track cases of atrocities against women.

“Police and traffic departments will observe whether any kind of crime is happening in a vehicle or any kind of atrocity against women,” Mamata Banerjee said.

“Police will be able to locate the vehicle as soon as a panic button is pressed. This panic button will be installed in the vehicle itself. As soon as the button is pressed, police will locate you and will be able to track and talk to you,” she said.

In the first phase, the system will be installed in over 1,60,000 vehicles. According to the West Bengal transport department, it is the first state to implement a location tracking system in public transport vehicles for the safety of passengers.

Besides the system, CM Mamata Banerjee also inaugurated a multi-level parking lot in Alipore.

“Around 400 buses or vehicles can be parked in the parking lot so roads will be free from parking,” the Bengal CM said.
