TMC neta killed in clash over loud music in Malda – Times of India

MALDA: A 65-year-old local Trinamool Congress leader died on Tuesday night trying to stop a scuffle between two groups of locals over blaring music in Malda’s Mothabari. Fifteen people have been detained in this connection.
On Tuesday morning, a group from Pathanpara village were playing loud music while passing through Mandalpara village under Mothabari police station, on their way back from a picnic. Local leader Afjal Momin, along with other villagers, protested, leading to a scuffle. Momin and some others intervened and defused the situation.
In the afternoon, the Pathanpara residents returned in larger numbers, armed with bamboo sticks and rods. Momin stepped out to stop the clash but was attacked and lost consciousness. Villagers rushed Momin to Malda Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Momin’s son Jahangir Ali said his father had heart problems. “He had protested as he was feeling unwell at the blaring sounds of the DJ box. But he was pushed and attacked,” he said. Ali later lodged an FIR against Mamum Sk, who reportedly led the Pathanpara villagers.
Malda police superintendent Pradeep Yadav said: “A scuffle broke out over playing music between two groups of youths. Momin tried to stop the scuffle and got pushed. He fell and died due to head injury. Till now, FIR-named accused Mamun Sk and 14 others have been apprehended and are being questioned.”
State minister Sabina Yeasmin said: “Momin was a very respected leader of our party. His demise is shocking. Let the police do their work and the culprits must be arrested.”
Momin had been elected to the local gram panchayat five times. He had recently left Congress to join Trinamool.
