KOLKATA: Minimum temperature jumped three degrees in Kolkata for the second consecutive day on Monday and touched 20.3°C even as dense morning fog reduced visibility in several areas of the city, including those along the EM Bypass.
While the morning fog may continue on Tuesday, the mercury may remain around the 20°C and start sliding again from Wednesday, said the Met office. While Monday’s minimum temperature was six degrees above normal, the maximum temperature was 28.9°C, three degrees above normal.
A high-pressure zone above Bay of Bengal, which has been supplying moisture to south Bengal, and a slowing down of the chilly northwesterly wind have combined to pull the mercury up.
“Southeasterly winds have been carrying in the moisture, resulting in fog. It will continue to flow in till the second half of Tuesday. Subsequently, it will slow down as the high-pressure zone turns weak, cutting off the moisture infusion. This will result in a change of weather from Wednesday,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director, GK Das. Minimum temperature is expected drop at least two degrees and settle at 18 degrees on Wednesday.
“It will keep sliding with the northwesterly gaining strength and the moisture supply waning. By December 30, it could drop to 14°C. The city is set to have a chilly New Year eve,” added Das.
The maximum temperature, too, is set to drop to 25-26°C. Till Saturday, Kolkata had a minimum temperature of 14°C while the maximum was 28.6°C. It jumped three degrees and touched 17.2°C on Sunday.
