Kolkata: More than 100 motorists were booked for drink-driving on Christmas Eve in Kolkata and Bidhannagar as cops intensified checking at nakas and other checkpoints for the festive season.
Under Kolkata Police’s jurisdiction, a total of 878 vehicles were checked in naka zones and 78 people were booked for drink-driving. In Bidhannagar, 28 people were booked for the same offence. Foot patrollingwas intensified at Park Street, from J L Nehru Road till APC Road.
According to cops, most cases were reported in the Park Street-Park Circus, Girish Park-Jorabagan, Southern Avenue, New Town, Lake Town and EM Bypass-Kasba zones. Police said that they have sent all accused for blood tests. Those found with alcohol content above permissible limit were asked to submit their licences, which will be recommended for temporary suspension by the respective ACPs.
Entering eateries on Park Street on Saturday was a challenge, hence, a number of revellers chose pubs and restaurants outside that zone, explained senior officers.
Cops also booked 323 individuals in Kolkata and 109 people in Bidhannagar for other violations — 57 were booked for riding without helmets, 45 for triple-riding and 84 for dangerous driving; 59 were arrested for disorderly conduct in Kolkata and 48 for the same offence in Bidhannagar. “Such drives will continue through the week,” said an officer.
