Kolkata News

Kolkata: Between Thursday and Friday morning, 114 cases of drink-driving were registered in the city. In the run-up to Christmas, city cops have increased vigil on the roads, including Park Street, which have been witnessing snarls due to the festive season. On Friday evening, revellers heading to the Park Street-New Market area choked up the roads taking photographs, leading to traffic snarls.
Between Thursday and Friday, 46 motorists were found drunk during the day, and the nakas at 50 spots nabbed 68 in raids between midnight and 5am. The cops said the highest number of prosecutions — eight — was at Girish Park crossing. Sarat Bose Road-Southern Avenue crossing had five; BB Chatterjee Street-Rash Behari Avenue Connector crossing at Kasba reported five cases; Lords Crossing and Chhit Kalikapur-Prince Anwar Shah Connector reported four cases of drink-driving each. Similar prosecutions happened at DH Road-Banamali Naskar Road crossing and Maniktala crossing, with each reporting three cases.
There were 163 cases of dangerous driving on Thursday. Rogue riding was also a problem with 168 bikers prosecuted for triple riding and 271 hauled up for not wearing helmets. “We have tried to send out the signal that there will be relentless checking even during the Christmas weekend,” said DC (Traffic) Sunil Yadav.
On Christmas Day, traffic movement on Park Street is likely to be shut post 4pm-5pm.
