After logging an air quality index (AQI) score of 201 (as per Bangladesh’s weather monitoring station), Kolkata, India, ranked as the second most polluted city in the world on Thursday morning. Even in the previous months, from October to November, the metro city recorded the highest rise in toxic PM 2.5 pollution levels among other major cities located in the Indo-Gangetic plain, claimed a study conducted by Climate Trends.

Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, once again topped the list with a 251 AQI, the local media reported on Thursday. In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and ozone. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.

Similarly, in the third position ranked Vietnam’s Hanoi, with an AQI score of 192.

Air pollution consistently ranks among the top risk factors for death and disability worldwide. As per the World Health Organization, air pollution kills an estimated 7 million people globally every year, largely due to increased mortality from strokes, heart diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, lung cancers and acute respiratory infections.
