The prices of petrol and diesel remained unchanged on Thursday, 22 December 2022 for over seven months now. On May 21, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an excise duty cut on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 per litre and Rs 6 per litre, respectively. The Maharashtra government announced the Value-Added Tax (VAT) cut on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and Rs 3 per litre on diesel on July 15.
Meghalaya reduced the VAT on fuel prices on August 24, due to which petrol price in Shillong now is Rs 96.83 per litre, while diesel is retailing at Rs 84.72 per litre. Currently, petrol price in Delhi stands at Rs 96.72 per litre and diesel in Delhi costs Rs 89.62 per litre. Petrol and diesel in Mumbai are priced at Rs 106.31 per litre and Rs 94.27 per litre, respectively.

Retail petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state, depending on various factors like freight charges, Value Added Tax (VAT) and local taxes. Public sector Oil Marketing Companies, such as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd update the fuel prices daily at 6 am in line with international benchmark prices and foreign exchange rates.
