Kolkata: January 1 onwards the Kolkata Traffic Police will roll out e-challans across the city. As many as 21 of the total 25 traffic guards in the city will get five officers each to operate the e-challan machines.
Sources say that the officers have already been trained to carry out the e-challan process. “We have asked for 105 such machines,” said joint CP (Traffic), Santosh Pandey, nodal officer, who is leading the e-challan initiative.
Currently, all the officers from the four traffic guards — South, Headquarter, Howrah Bridge and Jorabagan — will prosecute the motorists on the e-challan platform. However, other officers of these traffic guards will adhere to the old regime of prosecution till e-courts come up at Alipore and Sealdah.

After the trial begins, prosecutions will be carried out via three different methods that are: intercepting a vehicle, without intercepting a vehicle and by virtually impounding the documents.

“It will make challans paperless and allow payment of traffic fines online. Once the court gets designated, the court arbitrations will be online. That will also usher in the scope of seizing documents online,” said an officer at Lalbazar. Since July 2021, the police had been conducting trial runs at five traffic guards in the city and had made several recommendations to the central software developing agency in this regard. Several suggestions have been incorporated in tweaking the machine.
