Man beats a chained dog in Kolkata, arrested after outrage on social media – India Today

A man in Kolkata was arrested after a video of him beating a chained dog went viral on social media.

The police arrested the accused under the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act, 1960.

By Suryagni Roy: A 50-year-old man was arrested for allegedly beating a chained dog with a heavy object in West Bengal’s Kolkata. The whole incident came to the fore after a video of the same went viral on social media.

Following the incident, the Kolkata police, having received a large number of texts demanding action against the accused on social media, arrested Anil Prasad under the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act 1960, and the dog was handed over to an NGO, which separately sought action against the accused.

“The video resulted in a flood of messages to our inbox from outraged netizens and an official letter of complaint from a representative of an NGO. It was on the basis of the letter that Amherst Street Police Station registered a case, and a team from the PS arrested Anil Prasad (50), a resident of Ghosh Lane, from his home at around 11.00 pm yesterday under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960” read the Kolkata Police note.
