Kolkata: The West Bengal government has been directed to refrain from further unnecessary arrests and harassments of any individual in connection with the BJP’s recent march to the state secretariat of Nabanna. The order came from a division bench of the Calcutta High Court in response to a petition filed against the Trinamool Congress administration. The same bench will hear the matter again on October 31.

Pockets of the eastern state – especially in Kolkata and Howrah district – had turned into virtual battlefields on September 13 over BJP’s march to Nabanna against corruption issues. BJP activists had clashed with the police at several places, and a number of people from both sides were injured. A police vehicle was also torched on that day.

Last week West Bengal Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi had submitted a report on the violence during the BJP’s march to the Calcutta High Court.

The petition filed before the HC had accused the TMC government of continuing harassment of the BJP workers in the matter. BJP’s counsel Subir Sanyal alleged that that the police have continued arresting people even days after that day of the agitation with a total of 550 people being nabbed till now. The state’s advocate meanwhile had contended that most of the people detained in the matter have been released at a later stage with nobody being arrested without reason.
The TMC has held the BJP responsible for the violence, with party general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee stating that he would have shot the offenders in their heads if he had he been there at the spot. His statement attracted strong criticisms from the opposition parties.

A five-member central fact-finding team of BJP had also come to West Bengal and interacted with the injured party workers recently.
