Kolkata: Throughout the night, there was torrential rain in the districts of Kolkata and South Bengal. Even on Tuesday morning, there is no indication that the rain will stop. The sky over the city was shrouded in big, dark clouds. The Alipur Meteorological Department predicts that Tuesday may also see periods of heavy rain.

As a depression in the Bay of Bengal moved inland across Odisha on Tuesday, Kolkata was marked by a hazy sky and numerous intervals of rain.

T On the opening day of the week, the first rainstorm of the month took many people off guard. Almost all of Sunday night and various times throughout the day were cloudy with rain. Monday evening at about 8:30 pm, a new spell began.

The weather in Kolkata is expected to stay cloudy through Wednesday.

“Rain is very likely in the next two days. But not heavy rain,” said G.K. Das, director of the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.
The city received around 45mm of rain between 8.30pm on Sunday and 8.30pm on Monday, the wettest 24 hours so far this month, the Met office said.

In Met parlance, 60mm of rain in 24 hours qualifies as heavy.

The depression that triggered the showers weakened into a “well-marked low-pressure area” and was stationed over Madhya Pradesh on Monday morning, said a Met bulletin.

“The monsoon trough is passing through Odisha. But a secondary trough extends from the low-pressure area in Madhya Pradesh to the Bay. Jharkhand and Gangetic Bengal are under the trough,” he said.

According to weather office sources, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Howrah, Hooghly, Paschim Medinipur, Dui Burdwan, Murshidabad. Wind speed may be high in coastal areas. Fishermen have been banned from going to sea till Wednesday.
