Since the pandemic, the sale of these seized vehicles has gained importance. “Ever since we began confiscating more vehicles under stringent traffic laws, the police stations have become overcrowded. This led to overcrowding of the dump yards. This time, with directions from the top brass to keep police properties clean in face of a possible dengue outbreak, this auction has become more important,” said an officer. The last auction was last December when around 300 vehicles were sold off.

Police have compiled a list of various impound vehicles that need to be moved to the dump yards before to Pujas but are now being held outside of police stations or in impound yards.
“These vehicles, by law, can be crushed and sold off through a tendering process after six months. They can be sold as scrap steel. This will prevent them from being dumped in water bodies and help prevent dengue, which can happen due to mosquitoes breeding inside automobile parts lying outside. The sale will also create space in front of police stations and enable KMC conservancy workers to clean the areas,” mayor Firhad Hakim had said recently.
