Kolkata: In an effort to declutter the impound yards during dengue season, Kolkata Police will auction off one ambulance, a cab, a few buses, several trucks and small trucks, and more than one hundred two-wheelers.
This phase will result in the delivery of 194 vehicles to the scrap yard, for which bids have been floated. According to TOI, these vehicles are currently at the Vidyasagar Setu, Sick Lane, and Bantala waste yards.

Since the pandemic, the sale of these seized vehicles has gained importance. “Ever since we began confiscating more vehicles under stringent traffic laws, the police stations have become overcrowded. This led to overcrowding of the dump yards. This time, with directions from the top brass to keep police properties clean in face of a possible dengue outbreak, this auction has become more important,” said an officer. The last auction was last December when around 300 vehicles were sold off.

Of the 80 or so police stations in the city, 20 have seized the current lot. These include the police stations on Park Street, Bowbazar, Garfa, Entally, New Market, Chitpore, Lake, Sinthi, Kasba, Jorabagan, Nadial, Purba Jadavpur, Alipore, South Port, West Port, Patuli, Hare Street, Rabindra Sarobar, Girish Park, and Rajabagan. The Lake police had taken possession of the ambulance.

Police have compiled a list of various impound vehicles that need to be moved to the dump yards before to Pujas but are now being held outside of police stations or in impound yards.

“These vehicles, by law, can be crushed and sold off through a tendering process after six months. They can be sold as scrap steel. This will prevent them from being dumped in water bodies and help prevent dengue, which can happen due to mosquitoes breeding inside automobile parts lying outside. The sale will also create space in front of police stations and enable KMC conservancy workers to clean the areas,” mayor Firhad Hakim had said recently.
