Kolkata Police won’t allow parking near schools, to keep key arterial roads operational – Times of India

Kolkata News
KOLKATA: Traffic cops will focus on keeping four arterial roads – AJC Bose Road, Park Street along with adjoining Loudon, Rawdon and Short Street, APC Road and Diamond Harbour Road – operational when some ICSE and CBSE schools reopen on Monday.
With monsoon setting in and several protest rallies lined up, the cops are chalking out local strategies to keep the traffic moving. During school hours, cops have decided to remove fee parking zones from four roads – Loudon Street, Rawdon Street, Short Street and Moira Street. Police have also planned some short detours to keep the traffic that emerges from Elgin Road flowing.

The traffic police have already decided to disallow parking on all roads leading to school main gates. During the summer vacation, other vehicles have been parking in the ‘no-parking’ zones near schools with police not objecting as it did not hamper traffic movement. But they plan to impose the no-parking rules from Monday.
“Now that schools will be back to old timings, we have to plan to segregate the traffic converging from different schools. If required, we might request schools for a more staggered timing,” said joint CP (traffic) Santosh Pandey.
All traffic guards have been asked to ensure that official parking lots are utilized in the morning before allowing additional parking in adjoining roads. “We will not allow on-spot additional temporary parking slots in bylanes unless official parking lots are all full. The no-honking and illegal parking drives will continue,” said another officer.
Police are also coordinating with PWD to ensure that there is no major water accumulation outside schools in Joka. Additional cops will be deployed to keep Darga Road operational.
An officer said it has always been a challenge to manage traffic in stretches that have multiple schools. “When schools are open, many commuters avoid some stretches. In last two years, all these vehicles had been using this stretch as schools were closed. We hope they will start avoiding these stretches again,” he said.
