Colleges line up special classes to finish syllabus in Kolkata – Times of India

Kolkata News
KOLKATA: Colleges affiliated to Calcutta University are racing against time to finish the pending syllabus before the semester examinations begin in offline mode.
Another reason behind rushing to complete the curriculum is that students protesting against the offline mode of exams are citing non completion of syllabus and paucity of time to before the start of the examinations.
Last week Calcutta University in a meeting of its syndicate had decided that the upcoming even semester examinations will be conducted in offline mode sparking protests from a section of students.

University authorities had also added that principals must arrange for special classes to finish the syllabus so that students can take the examinations prepared.
Before taking the decision on the mode of the examinations, the university had sought the opinion of the college principals. Most heads of colleges were in favour of offline mode of examination.
Principal of a north Kolkata college where students have been protesting since Monday against offline exams, said he had instructed the heads of the departments to conduct special classes for batches that needed them.
“We have started special classes from Monday onwards for some of the batches where some portions of the syllabus were left. Heads of the departments will take the decision which are the batches that require special classes,” said the principal.
A section of students has been protesting in various colleges across the city and also outside the CU campus on College Street against holding exams in offline mode.
Since most colleges are in the midst of summer recess, theory classes are being held online. “Even before the summer recess was announced we had said that classes might be held online as and when required,” said Tapan Poddar, principal of Vivekananda College.
Most colleges like Asutosh, Bethune, Lady Brabourne, St Xavier’s College had already declared that students might have to come to the campus for practical classes. “Practical classes are very important, so we don’t want the students to miss those. Almost all the students have received consent from their guardian to attend the practical classes,” said the principal of a south Kolkata college.
