KOLKATA: An 18-year-old youth was gunned down at Titagarh on the northern fringes of the city on Thursday night after his father had reportedly refused to meet an extortion demand of Rs 1 lakh.
Cops have arrested the shooter, Vicky, a local criminal, in connection with the murder of Selim Sahaji.
According to locals, Selim, who sustained a bullet injury on his back, was found lying in a pool of blood off GT Road near Titagarh railway gate No 10 barely a couple of hours after he had gone to visit a fair at Titagarh’s Moralpara on Friday evening.
The youth was rushed to the Barrackpore BN Bose hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Sources said the victim’s father Samar Sahaji, a resident of Titagarh’s Gazibaba Mazar and a trader, was threatened with dire consequences by a group of local extortionists.
“Some youths from Titagarh’s Nayabasti had barged into my house and demanded Rs 1 lakh from me nearly three months ago. As I had refused to pay it, the miscreants had thrashed me while my son came to my rescue. But I never imagined that they would shoot my son dead,” said Sahaji.
“Prima facie it appears that a monetary dispute led to the murder,” Manoj Kr Verma, police commissioner, Barrackpore told TOI.
