A month ago, TOI had reported that cops had on March 16 proposed to KMC to construct refuge islands at 26 important crossings. The decision was taken to ensure pedestrians could cross roads safely, as 2021 data showed 196 people had died on city roads that year, 77 of them pedestrians. few such temporary islands already in place at some spots were lying unused. Police said they would try to popularise them among pedestrians.
Among the spots for these islands are Hemanta Basu Sarani and BBD Bag, CR Avenue and MG Road, Dorina crossing, JM Avenue-Shyambazar Street, Exide crossing, Minto Park-Sarat Bose Road crossing, AJC Bose Road-DL Khan Road near PTS, Hastings crossing, APC Road-Aurobindo Road crossing, in front of Rajabazar Science College, Bypass-Bagmari Road, Bypass-Bengal Chemical crossing, Phoolbagan crossing, James Long Sarani-SN Roy Road crossing, DPS Road-Uday Sankar Sarani, Ruby crossing, and Bypass-Tagore Park.
“It becomes more challenging when pedestrians try to cross an intersection haphazardly amid peak traffic. Movement of pedestrians can be better controlled if refuge islands are created at intersections,” the police wrote to KMC.
