KOLKATA: A class X student, who hurriedly crossed the road to reach her school on time, was severely injured after being hit by a motorbike in front of her school at AE block on Thursday morning.
The incident highlighted perils of jaywalking as well as negligent driving especially around a school and the need of stricter policing at least during school start and end hours.
As the 15-year-old girl, bleeding from her head and crying in pain, laid on the road, the biker, like most other hit and run offenders, fled the spot. However, since the incident happened near the school, some teachers identified the girl and one of them took out a car and drove her to Bidhannagar sub divisional hospital where she got four stitches on her head and x-ray scans for injuries on her hands and legs.
“I had almost crossed the road when the bike hit me and I was flung off the road. I don’t remember much since then as I was in excruciating pain. But I saw some of my teachers and classmates surrounding me and a teacher took me to the hospital in their car,” said Riya Mahapatra, a resident of Karunamoyee Abasan in Salt Lake and a student of Bhagabati Devi Balika Vidyalaya.
After the incident, the school principal contacted the parents and wrote a petition before the local police station demanding immediate policing in front of the school premises to help students cross the road in morning and afternoon hours.
“Thankfully, the child is okay with only minor injuries. But it could have been worse. I called the local police station immediately after the incident and submitted a written petition to deploy policemen to help children cross the road,” said Pratibha Mondal, the school principal. “I will take up the matter with the Bidhannagar mayor and the local councilor,” she added.
An officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate said they will be doing the needful to prevent further such instances and will ensure stricter policing around the school premises.
