Kolkata: Chingrighata flyover set for short-term repairs – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: KMDA will attempt to temporarily extend the life of the Chingrighata flyover till a new one, which has been proposed from EM Bypass to New Town, is constructed. The agency has floated tenders for the work at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore.
The right-turn flyover that allows traffic from Science City and Metropolitan to turn into Salt Lake Bypass without encountering snarls or traffic from the opposite direction was constructed barely two decades ago. But fault lines had developed in just over a decade, with experts indicating a sag in the deck.
The repair and retrofitting work will attempt to strengthen the flyover’s load-bearing capacity. In addition to affixing more steel plates, grouting work will be done.
Officials said no more load test is required as the repairs will be carried out on the basis of the result from a test that was done earlier. The structural health assessment had diagnosed a defect in its structural design. Following this, heavy vehicles were banned on the flyover.
KMDA is currently carrying out repair work on Baghajatin rail over bridge while short-term repair work has just been completed on Kalighat Setu.
