Covid cases spike from 204 to 382 in 24 hours in Kolkata – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The daily Covid cases in Kolkata shot up sharply on Tuesday with the new case count inching towards 400. For more than a month the city was reporting fresh cases mostly in 100s barring the past few days when cases were reported in 200s. But on Tuesday it touched a new high after a sharp surge.
Of the total of 752 new cases reported from across the state in the past 24 hours, 382 were from Kolkata which is more than 50% of total count for the day. Health experts said that the city could soon be reeling under a surge if this rising trend is constant. The Kolkata case count on Monday was 204.
“We need to wait and watch for the next few days. But it seems a surge is quite imminent given the level of laxity people have started adopting and the festive revelry,” said a health department official.
The positivity rate that had been below 2% for weeks now too climbed to about 2.4% on Tuesday. Many labs across the city also said they are witnessing an abrupt jump in positivity rate and a number of families are testing positive together.
Along with Kolkata, North 24 Parganas is also seeing a slight rise in positive cases.
