Kolkata: Private school opens door for Covid patients, sets up a 30-bed facility – India Today

Kolkata News

With educational institutions shut in West Bengal due to coronavirus-induced lockdown, a private school in the capital Kolkata has decided to convert one of its sections into a Covid care facility.

The Don Bosco School in Kolkata’s Park Circus area on May 22 opened its doors to the Covid-19 patients by setting up a 30-bed round-the-clock facility.

Speaking to India Today, Father Bikash Mondal, Principal and Rector of Don Bosco School, stated it was the need of the hour to help patients who were not able to find beds in hospitals.

“As schools are closed, it is important that educational institutions like ours that have enough space to do something like this. We are providing these facilities especially for the people who cannot afford expensive treatment. There is also a huge demand for beds as well, so our goal is to help people, especially because we can do so as schools are closed. Why not use a part of the compound for this cause?” said Fr Bikash Mondal told India Today.

The initiative has been taken by the school administration along with alumni members. The venture will run under the leadership of cardiac surgeon Dr Atanu Saha of Rabindra Nath Tagore Institute of Medical Sciences, Kolkata.

“A team of experienced doctors and health care workers are working round the clock to ensure the best possible treatment for every patient. The centre is set up to treat moderately ill patients affected by Covid-19, as severely affected patients will need critical care and hence must be shifted to hospitals and nursing homes. The service is being catered for Rs 2900-3000 per bed including medicines and round-the-clock Oxygen” said Dr Saha to India Today.
