Minimum temperature may touch 19°C by weekend in Kolkata: Met – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The city woke up to a dense smog in some areas on Thursday, a result of a spurt in pollution, according to experts.
Even as Kolkata’s air quality remained poor, an influx of easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal led to a fog that eventually turned into smog due to pollution, said the Met office. While Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 15.5°C, the mercury is predicted to slide up to 18°C-19°C by the weekend.

The city’s air remained poor (201-300) throughout the day. However, as the day progressed, the air quality improved with sun rays facilitating the dispersal of the finer particulate matter in the lower strata of the air.
At 6 am, the AQI of Ballygunge Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS) was 229. At 8 am, it improved a shade and slid down to 219. At the Victoria Memorial Hall monitoring station, the count improved from 262 to 255.
However, the AQI reading at Rabindra Bharati University CAAQMS was quite opposite. With the progress of the day, the air quality worsened. “We have to see why the reading at RBU was different,” said a WBPCB engineer.
“With moisture flowing into the region, the temperature will now rise. The minimum temperature is unlikely to slide below 15°C. Since the northwesterly wind is losing its sting, the mercury will now slide up. Day temperatures are going to be 30°C,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.
