Suicide pact whiff in Joka triple deaths – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: Three members of a family — a couple and their son — allegedly died by suicide at their home in the Joka tram depot area. The incident was reported around 7.45am on Wednesday from the Patrapara area, about a kilometre from the IIM Calcutta campus. Police suspect that the family had entered into a suicide pact.
The three —Chandrabrata Mondal (56), his wife Mayarani Mondal (47) and son Supriyo Mondal (23) — were found hanging in the same room by their relatives.
While the couple hanged themselves from the fan, the
son had hanged himself from a beam in the room. Cops said no suicide note had been recovered from their single-storied house, making it difficult for them to ascertain the exact reason behind the decision.
While Chandrabrata was employed as a Group-D staffer of the state assembly, his wife ran a small sari business. Supriyo — a diploma engineer, who had quit his job in Pune around the lockdown — had been trying to establish a business of selling birds, said cops.
Some of the relatives said the family was going through a financial crisis after Chandrabrata reportedly took a loan worth a few lakhs from a private bank. In the last few months, Chandrabrata had resorted to several parttime jobs.
Police, however, said they were going through bank statements to gauge their financial condition.
Cops said that the family was last seen around 9.30pm on Tuesday when Supriyo returned from a local club after watching a football match. Supriyo usually ate dinner during half time and rushed back to watch the second half of the match. He, however, did not do so on Tuesday.
“The family usually woke up by 5am. When my brotherin-law did not respond to calls from neighbours, they asked his nephew Saugata Patra to check. He then came to the house along with their friend Prasenjit,” said Ananta Raut.
“Finding the main door locked, they climbed on the roof to enter the house. Once inside, they found the room door locked as well. They broke it open to find the three hanging. No external injury mark was noticed. The bodies have been sent for autopsy to know the cause of death,” said DC (Behala) Syed Waquar Raza.
A separate team from the homicide wing also visited the spot on Wednesday.
