KOLKATA: A hearing-impaired first-year college student — who reportedly had problems attending lectures over online classes because of her condition — was found dead on a Lake Town road, around one-and-a-half kilometres from her home on Sunday night.
Cops said they found a three-page suicide note on the terrace of the building, near which the girl was found in a pool of blood. Cops have also come across a WhatsApp status on the girl’s phone number, where she apologized to her parents for leaving them.
“In the three-page note, too, Nidhi Poddar (18) apologized to her family and friends for leaving them as she was unable to bear the pain. Her friends said she had difficulty in following the online classes and was under depression,” said an officer.
According to cops, the girl, youngest of three daughters of a businessman in the area, had left her home on S K Deb Road in Lake Town in the evening to buy noodles around 8.30pm. Her parents were alerted by a friend, an hour later about the WhatsApp status. Since Nidhi’s mobile was switched off, the parents reached the Lake Town police station by 10.15pm, pleading before the cops to find the girl.
“While we were noting down the complaint and sending out a team to find the girl, we received information from a resident of Bangur Avenue about a young girl lying on the road with severe injuries on her face. The local, who had heard a loud thud, said the girl was still breathing and that they were taking her to the nearest nursing home. But by the time she reached the hospital, she was dead,” said a senior officer of Lake Town police station.
Police said they found the girl’s shoes, spectacles, the suicide note and her hearing aid on the terrace of the five-storey building. The parents allegedly confirmed the handwriting as that of their daughter. Cops said preliminary investigation revealed the girl had died because of the fall. An officer added, “She had also undergone a surgery to deal with her hearing condition. The girl’s family demanded a full inquiry.”
