Kolkata: New Garia-Ruby run may start with fewer station entries – Indiatimes.com

KOLKATA: When the New Garia-Ruby Metro opens, probably in the next few weeks, two of its five stations may sport three access points, instead of four.
The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), which gives the final nod for any new Metro line in India, has received documents explaining the reason behind the incomplete construction. The city’s fourth Metro line suffered months of delay because the state agencies were taking time handing over the sites for the fourth entrances of Hemanta Mukherjee (Ruby crossing) and Kavi Sukanta (Avishikta crossing) stations.
Rarely does the CRS allow incomplete stretches to operate, but the truncated 5.4km New Garia-Ruby stretch of the 32km New Garia-Airport corridor is likely to be an exception. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), tasked to implement most of Kolkata’s Metro projects, has promised that ongoing constructions at the respective stations would be over by March-end.
On Monday, CRS, North Frontier circle, Suvomoy Mitra, conducted the mandatory inspection of the Orange line – between Kavi Subhas terminal (New Garia) and Hemanta Mukherjee station (Ruby crossing).
Sources said the commercial operations of the truncated Metro segment will start in February, once the safety regulator’s approval comes. And, Kolkata will have two Metro corridors – the country’s oldest Metro or the North-South line and the New Garia-Ruby or Line 6 – connected for the first time.
A senior RVNL official said, “We have submitted documents to the CRS to enunciate when the sites were handed over to us. Hopefully, the explanation would suffice and the nod for revenue operations will come through. The pace of construction has been hastened – workers are on the job 24×7 so the two station gates are ready by March-end.”
The stretch has five stations – Kavi Subhas (New Garia), Satyajit Ray (Hiland Park), Jyotirindra Nandi (Metro Cash & Carry-Ajoynagar area), Kavi Sukanta (Avishikta crossing) and Hemanta Mukherjee (Ruby crossing). RVNL received the sites in August-end and could start work only in September.
Procedural delays in shifting the CESC cable came in the way of building the entrance “A” of Hemanta Mukherjee Metro station at Ruby crossing.
For entry structure “D” of Kavi Sukanta Metro station at Avishikta crossing, KMDA and KMC were unable to shift the 15 shanties at the EM Bypass-Kalikapur crossing. RVNL, which was running out of time, changed entrance D’s layout so that work could start.
