Kolkata: After two years of low-key celebrations due to the pandemic, the Kolkata Christmas Festival will return this year in all its splendor and grandeur and will move outside the city to churches throughout Kolkata. The opening of the 12th iteration of the carnival will take place on December 21 in Allen Park on Park Street by Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee.

Kolkata is no short of an ancient architectural wonderland, so naturally, there are numerous aesthetic churches that you can visit this Christmas. In Kolkata, Park Street, Allen Park, and Cathedral Road are some of the few places that are all decked up for Christmas, and this year will be no different.

1. Kolkata Christmas Festival 2022

Starting on December 21, Park Street and Allen Park will have food, entertainment, and more to enjoy over the holiday season.

This year, the pop-up food vendors will return after a 2-year hiatus. Attendance at the Park Street carnival has remained robust throughout the pandemic, and this year the organisers anticipate an all-time high.

Every year huge crowds gather to experience the festivities at Allen Park. On December 26, the Kolkata Police will present a spectacular event. Carols in English, Hindi, and Bengali will be performed by church choirs.

2. St Paul’s Cathedral

A sizable crowd gathers in Kolkata for the midnight service at St. Paul’s Cathedral. So, if you want a seat, get there early because the throng sometimes spills out into the grounds.

This cathedral, one of Kolkata’s most well-known landmarks, was constructed between 1839 and 1847 in the Indo-Gothic style and is decorated for Christmas with lights and a Nativity scene.

3. Bow Barracks

Bow Barracks, like every year, will be illuminated with special thematic lights. The Bow Barracks Fest is best experienced in the evenings when the illuminations are turned on and, coupled with the Christmas trees and other decorations, transform the area for a few days into a wonderful, magical land.

The neighborhood’s prayer grotto has been cleaned up, and a crib has been added to the side. Numerous events, such as philanthropic endeavours, sports games, and musical performances, take place on various days.

Certain Anglo-Indian families do put up booths where they sell their handcrafted goods. The holiday season starts on December 23 and lasts until January 1.
