Kolkata: The weather system over the Bay of Bengal turned into a depression on Saturday evening and it is expected to take the shape of a cyclonic storm by October 24. The Cyclone Sitrang will bring heavy downpours to Kolkata on Monday and Tuesday, gifting a wet Kali Puja and Diwali. However, in a relief to the city, weather officials now predict that the cyclone is expected to head north without making severe damages to Kolkata.

“The low-pressure system is expected to move northwestwards till the early hours of Monday. Then, just before intensifying into a cyclone, it is expected to take a recurve and move north first and then northeast. Though the system is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, it is likely to move towards Bangladesh,” the director of the India Meteorological Department in Kolkata GK Das said in a bulletin.

On Saturday, the low-pressure area at present over the north Andaman Sea was intensified into a depression. It is expected to turn into a deep depression on October 23 and will take the shape of a cyclonic storm by October 24, the IMD said. Once the system reaches land on early Monday, it will become a cyclone and further turn into a severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening.
